Over the past 30 years, biotechnology has revolutionized the health care available to patients in the developed world. In the developing world, however, millions of patients die each year from infectious diseases of poverty because we don’t yet have modern medicines to prevent, treat and diagnose deadly pathogens. Biotechnology can make major inroads in treating neglected diseases – and offer hope for cures in our lifetimes.
BVGH breaks down barriers that hinder industry initiatives in global health product development. We foster collaboration among stakeholders in industry, philanthropy, academia, and government, and we catalyze industry investment through the creation of new market-based incentives.
Spotlight: Priority Review Vouchers

Congress enacted an important market-based incentive for investment in new drugs and vaccines to prevent and treat neglected tropical diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and sleeping sickness. This program, to be administered by the FDA, awards a priority review voucher (PRV) to the sponsor of a newly approved drug or biologic that targets a neglected tropical disease.
The voucher, which is transferable and can be sold, entitles the bearer to a priority review for any future new drug application - potentially reducing the standard FDA review by four months to as many as 12 months. The value of this new voucher may help offset the substantial investment companies make in developing drugs and vaccines for neglected tropical diseases.
