Connecting people and ideas to save lives in the developing world
The 2011 Partnering for Global Health Forum was held June 27, 2011, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. The Forum served as a one-of-a-kind international partnering meeting focused on creating new market-based solutions that speed the development of drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics for the world’s poorest. Watch the engaging debates that occurred at the 2011 Forum here.
The 2011 Partnering for Global Health Forum featured a keynote address by Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (pictured left), who spoke about how groundbreaking biotechnology innovations can serve the health needs of the world's poorest. Dr. Rajiv Shah, Administrator of USAID, addressed Forum attendees and held an interactive question and answer session during the networking luncheon.
Key decision-makers from emerging markets – including Dr. Bongi Gumede of South Africa's Technology Innovation Agency, Minister Lino Barañao of Argentina's Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovative Production, and Julio Ramundo, Director at the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) – along with biotech industry leader G. Steven Burrill, CEO of Burrill and Company, provided practical guidance on how to navigate international regulatory requirements and the challenges of investing in emerging market companies.
To help clarify the unique rules of the global health field, high-level experts – including Amie Batson, USAID Deputy Assistant Administrator for Global Health, Dr. Regina Rabinovich, Director of the Infectious Diseases Program at the Gates Foundation, and Orin Levine Executive Director, International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) – explained the means by which a potential development opportunity is moved past the lab, through the global health value chain, and into the hands of patients.
The 2011 Forum was co-located with the BIO International Convention, the world’s premier biopharmaceutical industry conference, which allowed non-profit, funder, academic, governmental and non-governmental registered attendees with access to the Convention’s most important component – the Business Forum – at no additional cost.
