The number of polio cases in Afghanistan tripled in 2011 to 76, The New York Times reports. Afghanistan is one of three countries in the world where polio is endemic; and while the total number of cases is small, it is highly contagious and officials say there are likely many people who are infectious even though their symptoms are very minor.
