Start Me Up

Posted by: BIO Ventures for Global Health on 4/6/2010

Welcome to my first blog post as the new Chief Operating Officer of BIO Ventures for Global Health! I’m very excited to be on board. A few introductory comments. . .

My commitment to global health comes first from my industry experience and the desire for an evolving career path. I left law firm life more than 15 years ago to join a small biotech company, to become involved in life sciences and help make a difference in the way people live.  Since then I’ve been very fortunate to be with cutting-edge companies, technologies, and products, always with the goal of meeting unmet medical needs for the developed world.  Over time I realized that I wanted to take my industry knowledge and apply it to the unmet needs of the developing world—needs that are of course far more basic, yet are being left behind as the technological advances of the developed world continue. This gap results from many factors, including hugely disproportionate resources, inadequate incentives, the requirements of business models, and limits on access and distribution of current treatments.

I have been energized by the advent of “venture philanthropy” and a novel, results-driven approach to philanthropic effort.  This has created a new impetus for addressing not just global health but any number of social issues which are critical for the future of the planet:  education, literacy, and environmental conservation are just a few of what are now perceived as solvable rather than intractable, inevitable challenges.  The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has taken a giant leadership role in this regard (full disclosure:  they are a significant funder of BVGH’s activities).

So BVGH offered me a unique opportunity:  to use my industry background and training to help bring biotechnology innovations to the unmet needs of the developing world.  We address some of the “gap” factors described above in ways that are consistent with the business models, missions, and priorities not only of the biopharma community, but of global health organizations, PDPs, and funders. We intend to connect, communicate, and create information, ideas, and incentives to bridge the innovation gap.

I also joined BVGH through inspiration from my kids, whose world view is shaping my own.  They see the world without limits, without borders or boundaries, in their friendships; their communities; and their responsibilities.  I hope to live up to that ideal too.  More soon!

Welcome, Don, and I look forward to hearing more about your plans for BVGH at the PGHF in a few weeks. In the meantime, please consider my respectfully-submitted additions to BVGH’s strategy and business development objectives: -advocacy for the creation of an SBIR program specific to the development of products for neglected disease or requiring the NIH to allocate part of its SBIR/STTR set-aside for projects in this area; -advocacy for amplifying the current r and d tax credits for companies developing global health products and making the credits transferable to generate income for companies with no tax liability; -partnering with the product development partnerships (PDPs) to offer a resource database for companies seeking drug development guidance especially in the design, funding, and initiation of clinical trials; -a concerted effort to attract companies to the upcoming partnering forum by bringing in recognized investors, such as angel investor groups and social venture funds; -engaging the PDPs in accessing the BVGH’s IP Pool for new product leads and increasing the usefulness of Pool by adding a user-friendly search interface such as offered by Patsnap; -advocacy for increased funding for the NIH Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases program and the requirement that it offers no-cost screening services to all PDPs and small companies; -advocacy for the extension of the FDA’s priority review voucher program to include the granting of priority review “options” to companies whose products reach pre-approval milestones; -advocacy for the FDA’s granting some type of exclusivity to drugs for neglected diseases for US markets similar to that granted orphan drugs; -advocacy for a requirement that recipients of Federal funding provide no cost licenses to Federal inventions to companies developing global health products; -provision of guidance to companies seeking access funding through program-related investments of foundations; -partnering its Global Health Connect program with other similar initiatives such as the Global Health Accelerator and Global Health Progress; and -advancing to implementation the concept of open innovation for global health through a partnership with a company in R and D management like Collaborative Drug Discovery.

You really don't realize how good we have it in the US when it comes to health care until you visit other countries. Africa and South America are in desperate need of our help. I give to various charities annually to help these countries get the medical supplies they need to improve their situation.

This is a perfect example of why we need to have worldwide medical insurance . We are a highly established country and could help other countries with their medical needs. We could be the angels that these other countries need.

"Glad to see an effort is made to improve the standards global healthcare. There is a general negative perception of drug and pharmaceutical companies because of the money hungry image they sometimes show. I hope that by working with BVGH, they can right that image, and prove that they too want to benefit the less fortunate and make healthcare more affordable to developing countries. " Read more »
